Health Benefits Card FAQs

Getting Started with Your Benefits Card on Uber

What is a healthcare benefits card?

Benefit cards are pre-funded debit cards issued by health plans that are used only for eligible healthcare expenses. Eligible expenses may require insurance copayments and deductibles and are defined by your health plan. Examples may include prescription drugs, medical devices as well as transportation, grocery items, and over-the-counter medications; coverage will vary based on plan.

Some health plans now allow you to use your healthcare benefit card directly on Uber and Uber Eats for covered expenses. Going to and from a medical appointment, or ordering grocery and or over-the-counter (OTC) items should be easy.

Can I use my benefit card on Uber?

Yes, starting in 2024, if you have a participating plan, you can order store-to-door delivery with Uber Eats. You can get grocery and/or OTC items delivered from participating store locations within the Uber Eats network.

Some participating plans also allow you to request rides with Uber. Please contact your health plan for coverage details.

What is Uber and how do I get started?

Uber’s technology helps match consumers looking for rides and independent providers of ride services. We also connect consumers and grocers so they can buy and sell groceries and other items, then we match them with independent delivery service providers.

Can I use Uber on a desktop computer or do I need the app?

Uber is designed to work both on mobile and a web browser.

For grocery and over-the-counter-items, you can shop on a desktop computer at ubereats.com or on the Uber Eats app. If you choose to use the mobile app, download Uber Eats from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play.

For requesting rides, you can request a ride from a desktop computer at m.uber.com, but we recommend downloading the Uber app to your smartphone so you can easily request a return ride when you’re not at home. If you choose to use the mobile app, download the Uber app from the App Store iOS or Google Play Android.

You should use the same account to log into Uber and Uber Eats.

How do I request groceries, pharmacies, and convenience store items on my benefits card?

Create an account with Uber and add your card

  1. Go to ubereats.com or, if you haven’t already, download the Uber Eats app from the App Store (iOS, or Google Play (Android)
  2. Log in or create a new Uber account.
  3. Add your healthcare benefits card as a payment method when prompted. You can find the number for your healthcare benefits card on the card you received from your health plan. Make sure to also add another form of payment to your Uber wallet as a secondary payment to cover any items or fees not covered by your plan. In the app, select “Grocery” in the bottom menu. If you’re on ubereats.com, select “Grocery” from the menu on the top.
  4. Search for specific items in the search bar, or click into a store to browse grocery and OTC products. You can create multiple carts, but each cart will be from a single store and each cart will be delivered to you separately.
  5. Add items to the cart by selecting the plus sign or select the item image for a closer look.

When you’re ready to check out, you’ll see:

  • Delivery details: Double check your address and your selected delivery option (e.g. “meet at door” or “leave outside.”). Delivery estimate: your estimated delivery time
  • Payment: Make sure you have your health benefits card selected
  • Order total: With some plans, you will see a breakdown of what’s covered by your benefits card and what’s covered by your secondary method. If you don’t see a breakdown, the items are covered by your benefits card. Items may be subject to taxes.
  • Delivery and service fees (plan coverage varies) When everything looks right, tap “go to checkout” then “next”, and lastly, “place order”.

Follow your order in the app

  • First, you’ll see the store accept and start prepping.
  • Then, when the order’s almost ready, a nearby delivery person—in a car, on a bike, or a scooter—will go to the store to pick it up or shop for you.
  • Next, they’ll drive or ride to you. You’ll be able to see their name and photo and track their progress on the map.

Eligibility and Coverage

What items are covered by my benefits card?

Eligible items vary based on plan. If an item is not covered by your card, it will be charged to the secondary payment method on your account or you will be asked to remove the item from your cart before you can continue.

Some plans allow you to see which items are eligible on the payment screen before you complete your order. Otherwise, proceed to the checkout to see what’s eligible. Restrictions apply to alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and other items. Please contact your health plan for coverage details.

Are tips and fees covered by my card?

Applicable fees will be covered by your benefits card if deemed eligible. Tax for covered items is charged to your benefits card; however, other fees may be charged to your secondary payment method if they are not covered by your benefits plan. Coverage may vary by plan. Please contact your health plan for coverage details.

Why are some items not covered?

Please visit your program website and contact your plan or card vendor’s support team for questions about your plan’s eligibility.

What happens if an item is not covered?

Depending on your health plan (and card provider) this experience may vary. For some, item eligibility is determined by the benefits card provider on an item-by-item basis: if an item is not covered by your card, it is charged to the secondary payment method on the account. For others, if there’s an ineligible item in your cart such as alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and others, you will either need to switch the entire cart to a new payment method or remove the item before you can checkout.

Am I able to use Uber Cash and my healthcare benefit card in the same cart?

Right now, Uber Cash cannot be used as a secondary payment in combination with your healthcare benefits card.
